Last week signaled a special milestone for Soony Moore, marking six years since the release of his debut Skrillex offering, My Name Is Skrillex. Since that seminal moment, the venerated DJ has taken electronic music to countless new spaces, and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
In 2010, Skrillex officially linked with deadmau5 and his imprint mau5trap for his sophomore EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. Before the release, Skrillex previewed the work at Beatport’s headquarters with deadmau5 in tow.
A quick video clip captures Skrillex playing out his now-classic “Rock N’ Roll,” presumably for the first time. He sheepishly tries to describe the blend of genres on the track, though six years later, it’s worth remembering that nothing had ever really sounded like that before. Former mentor deadmau5 stands nearby, beaming like a proud dad from ear to ear.
Little did anyone at the time know, but a critical moment was unfolding. Moore’s album would go on to win two Grammys for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album, cementing Skrillex as the most exciting new artist of the moment.
