The legendary Dutch DJ and producer Armin van Buuren has long reigned as the undisputed flag-bearer of the trance movement. A legacy cemented by his record five-time title as the world’s No. 1 DJ and his globally syndicated radio show, A State of Trance (ASOT). While Armin continues to command main stages at major festivals like Tomorrowland, EDC, and the recent ‘Pillars of Creation’ performance, his recent career has been marked by a bold and deeply personal exploration into his musical roots.
This period of creative growth saw him release the two-part, genre-blending album project Breathe (Breathe In and Breathe Out), and even collaborate on hard-hitting techno with Adam Beyer. Now, Armin takes his most introspective turn yet with the announcement of his first acoustic project, a full piano album titled Piano. Leading this new chapter is his debut piano single, ‘Sonic Samba‘,” a raw and evocative composition that strips away the beats and synths to reveal an intimate new dimension of the trance icon’s artistry.
Armin van Buuren – Sonic Samba
Marking a significant departure, ‘Sonic Samba’ (recorded at Utrecht’s ConcertLab) sheds the familiar trance rhythms and synth layers for raw, live-played emotive melodies. This approach reveals Armin’s personal journey with the piano, an instrument he embraced years ago to find balance and clarity. By focusing on this organic sound, the piece highlights the pure freedom and precision of unassisted performance, giving listeners a radically different view of his artistry.
Creating melodies behind the piano has always been the foundation of my music. Together with my teacher Geronimo, sketches grew into pure pieces, free from beats. This project shows another side of me — intimate, honest, direct.
-Armin van Buuren
Representing the freedom and vulnerability driving the full Piano album—which he considers his most personal work to date—’Sonic Samba’ sets a clear tone. The compositions are inspired by family, nature, and self-reflection, fusing his classical roots with a profound sense of calm that provides a powerful contrast to his years on the festival circuit.
The Piano project arrives after a year of creative transformation for Armin van Buuren, who continues to effortlessly push beyond genre boundaries. With ‘Sonic Samba,’ he perfectly sets the tone for a body of work that masterfully bridges emotion and pure musicianship, marking the beginning of a bold, deeply introspective era for the trance icon.
