UK psych band drops dreamy, kaleidoscopic new record
Up next on the hype modern psych music train is Volleyball, with their new EP Kitua Fortune. Made up of Rudi, Hugh Tom & Thom, Volleyball is a hazy, dreamy band that’s also catchy and explorative, and is best spent listening to during an evening drive at golden hour. It’s got that unique, hypnotic touch that the Beatles used to once crown – that sends your thoughts in a kaleidoscope day dream. Released via Modern Sky Entertainment, their new EP Kitua Fortune is pushing its way to the forefront of the UK psych movement.
The EP begins with the elusive “Self Portrait,” an explosion of reverb and chorus that blends with light mellotrons, gentle drums and beautiful vocals that sing perfectly in unison. It’s got the feeling of a Mac Demarco track, but with a more nostalgic character to it. Following that is the title track, which is more upbeat and sets the tone for the rest of the EP with expressive harmonies and well thought through song structures. Though this is only the beginning of their ambitious psych journey, they’ve got plenty for fans to look forward to.
