A major remodel of Stockholm’s Avicii Arena transformed the huge venue into a modern marvel of sound and design. The project’s main goal was to transform Europe’s largest spherical building into an intimate space, paying tribute to the late Swedish DJ, Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii. It was important for the arena to be a place where the connection between performers and the audience, and between the fans themselves, could be felt deeply.
Revolutionary Audio Technology
The key to this transformation was a revolutionary sound system, installed by Danish company Stouenborg. Working with Meyer Sound and other partners, they created a setup using Constellation and Spacemap Go technologies. This system allows the arena to capture and move sound around the room in real time, making the space feel smaller and more personal. According to Anders Jørgensen, a project manager at Stouenborg, the venue went “from a venue that was considered the worst sounding in Northern Europe to one that’s now arguably the best“.
A Retractable Acoustic Ceiling
Part of this engineering success is a unique, retractable acoustic ceiling. This large steel structure can be lowered to adjust the acoustics of the dome, creating a more intimate sound, or raised to reveal the full dome for bigger shows. It also serves as a strong rigging point for lights and other equipment. The entire project was a complex operation, completed with military-like precision and planning to ensure every detail was perfect. The new Avicii Arena now serves as a tribute to its namesake, providing an immersive and unforgettable experience for every event.
A Tribute to a Musical Hero
This ambitious project reflects the spirit of Avicii himself, a hero in the EDM world who left us too soon. The arena’s new design and technology are not just about improving the experience of music and sports; they are about honoring his legacy. By creating a venue that fosters connection and shared moments, the Avicii Arena has become a fitting tribute to an artist who brought people together through his music. It stands as a symbol of what’s possible when technology, creativity, and precision unite to create something truly special.
