Feels illegal to have such a nostalgia trip of a release out in this day and age.
Maybe the return of Trance (proper Trance, mind you) has gone slightly unnoticed here and there. Yes, Calvin Harris released ‘Miracle’ some time ago, and yes, Peggy Gou’s stellar hit was a clever nod to ATB’s all-time classic, but not much else, maybe? Well, I’m here to say I’ve been noticing this rise, and it seems like 2025 will be its year. High-calibre artists all over are doing wonders for the genre which once ruled the world. And today is one of those cases.
When you see Ben Gold as the first artist in a song, you know it’s going to have superior quality, that’s undeniable. Now, pair that with the fact that for today’s release, ‘The Whip‘, you can also see five-man supergroup SUPERSTRINGS credited as artists. Now you know you’re in for some serious walk down Memory Lane.
‘The Whip’
Some may be fans of SUPERSTRINGS’ from-the-past sound, with multiple winks to the golden era of Trance, while others may have been at Ben Gold’s ASOT ADE set at the HQ club and fell in love with the journey he played. Whatever motorway took you to this track, you’re most likely going to be delighted at the warm sound it carries.
Yesteryear plucks play alongside forward-moving robotic arpeggios, engulfing pads, and that vocal chop lead that always takes you back to Binary Finary. On the percussion roster, we have orchestral hits, standard 909 elements (like the hats), powerful heavy-headed kicks, and a jumpy offbeat bass, which all give the sensation that either we’re not living in the current year, or that 2025 is going to be a beautiful time, where songs with a soul will be back, at long last.
