Calvin Harris makes an apt Valentine’s Day return as Love Regenerator, dishing out another duo of old-school rave tracks that further cements the Scottish DJ’s soft spot for the underground.
It seems like nobody taught Calvin the old saying “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” because directionally, Love Regenerator is about as different of a sound as one could expect from a new alias of one of the world’s highest-paid DJs. Thankfully, this latest set of releases demonstrates a sharpened focus and artistic expression that often gets muddled in the gargantuan Top 40 crossover releases. The newest EP, Love Regenerator 2, takes the intriguing idea of mixing and matching different styles under a fresh guise to the next level by instead blending decades. While ’90s rave inspired samples, tempos creeping up on 140 BPM, and dialed up acid lines might not hit the same sweet spot for the masses, there’s an undeniable layer of soul and charm in Love Regenerator’s releases that can be hard to find in EDM in 2020.
There has been no mention of Love Regenerator playing live shows, but one has to think this old-school sound would especially surge in a small, dark club.
