This is a strong candidate for Progressive gem of the year.
It’s no secret that Guy J is a genius. He’s a sort of King Midas of the Progressive House scene: everything he touches he turns to gold. After an extensive career that includes the 1000 Words albums, 100 releases in his former imprint Lost & Found which changed the course of the genre, consistent touring worldwide, and probably three hard disk drives full of unreleased music, Guy is at a point in his career where he’s shown he’s capable of anything and everything.
He could’ve very well called it quits as a producer and just stuck with the curation and label owner aspect of being an artist, given the fact that he recently founded yet another groundbreaking label, Early Morning, but he’s decided to keep going out to the field and playing the matches. And we’re so glad he’s doing so, because his level of mastery has only gone up more and more each time.
He recently whipped out the old reliable Cornucopia alias, his more melodic and intimate name, to present a frankly incredible remix on his very label. A future classic stemming from an already certified classic, Guy J recently released his long, long-awaited remix of ‘Roots‘, by the Chopstick & Johnjon duo.
‘Roots (Cornucopia Remix)’
Where do I even begin with this one… A few months ago, Guy J was invited to John Digweed’s weekly radioshow, Transitions, where he played an outstanding hour-long guestmix during Episode 1070. And the closing track of his set was something that blew me out of the water. I couldn’t believe such a gem existed. And the mix cut the track at 3 minutes, an absolutely criminal act.
For months, this was the only way many had to listen to a high-fidelity rip of the remix for ‘Roots’. That is, until the news spread that Early Morning would be the home for the highly anticipated Cornucopia remix of the 2013 release. The piece was released on July 25th, and it’s become even more of a fan favourite than it used to be as an ID.
I can’t describe this track any other way than “I’m flying“. The sheer way the pads make you feel, along with the subtle strings, that come and go like a tide, the sustained bassline, the soft, warm elements, and the piercingly beautiful original vocal, all make for a true flight. This is one of those tracks you can put on, close your eyes, and be sent to a different place.
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard this year. And let me tell you, I’ve listened to a bunch of music over the course of 2025, but this one really wants to aim for that remix of the year spot. My only complaint, as usual with Cornucopia, is that it should’ve lasted at least 15 minutes. It’s so pretty.
