Last month, Latin EDM powerhouse Deorro dropped his highly anticipated third studio album, BOTAS & RAVE. Blending the vibrant rhythms of cumbia, banda, quebradita, and tribal with high-octane EDM, the 11-track project explodes at elevated tempos of 160 BPM, delivering heavy drops and boundary-pushing energy that marks a bold new chapter in his discography. Featuring collaborations with Mexican music icons including 3BallMTY, Voces Del Rancho, and Montez De Durango, BOTAS & RAVE perfectly embodies the genre-blending movement Deorro pioneered—seamlessly fusing the soul of música Mexicana with the raw intensity of modern electronic music.
In this exclusive interview, we dive into the creative vision behind the album and his continued evolution as a cross-cultural artist.
Bridging Worlds Through Sound
When asked how he balances the traditional structures of banda, cumbia, and quebradita with the demands of a global mainstage EDM audience, Deorro emphasizes that the project is a reflection of his own heritage. "BOTAS & RAVE is a collection of different worlds within one world—the Mexican sound," he explains. "The journey began when I was a child, paying attention to the music at family parties. I would wait for songs that had that certain drive and energy that would get everyone on their feet."
For Deorro, the production process was deeply personal. "Coming from the world of electronic dance music, stepping into different genres can feel intimidating, but applying my Mexican culture to electronic dance music is more than just production. My heart immediately connected to it."
The Future of Mexican EDM
Looking toward the future, Deorro hopes the album serves as a bridge for listeners on both sides of the musical spectrum. "My dream would be for people on both sides to become aware of the other after listening to this album," he says. "I hope those who only listen to banda or cumbia give this a chance, and vice versa. I want those in the EDM world to gain even the tiniest bit of curiosity about Mexican culture."
Evolution and Collaboration
Reflecting on his career, Deorro notes that his approach to "bridging the gap" has remained consistent since his early hits like 'Bailar' with Elvis Crespo. "The respect for what I do has always been there. When I made 'Bailar,' I knew I had to respect the history of merengue. I spent two years learning the elements and rhythms before I felt confident enough to create my own version. That same patience and dedication went into BOTAS & RAVE."
The album's collaborations with legends like 3BallMTY and Voces Del Rancho represent a full-circle moment. "Working with these pioneers is a dream come true. They trusted me to guide the creative process, and that authenticity was the most important part of the project."
Deorro is currently preparing to bring this vision to the stage, with plans to incorporate a live band for a special segment of his upcoming shows. As he continues to dominate the festival circuit, his commitment to his roots remains the driving force behind his success.
