Dua Lipa channels the ’80s with disco-driven album, ‘Future Nostalgia’ [Stream]

Pop diva Dua Lipa is back and funkier than ever with her sophomore album, Future Nostalgia.

Chances are most people have heard a cut or two from her album at the gym or workout class, as the lead single, “Don’t Start Now,” has been a radio juggernaut. On March 27, Dua Lipa offered up a full-length, 11-track LP to showcase her retro-inspired, bright-colored vision.

From start to finish, the album is fun, flirty, and funky, pulling heavy inspiration from the ’70s disco revolution and ’80s pop with a modern feel that Dua has done in the past with songs like “One Kiss.” From the synth-y “Cool” that sounds like it belongs in a scene from the new season of Stranger Things or the chart-topping-primed “Break My Heart,” each song serves as a different neon window into the different ways the Albanian-UK songstress can blend pop, disco, funk, and house. Stand out singles from the album include “Don’t Start Now,” “Cool,” “Levitating,” “Hallucinate,” and “Break My Heart,” but in all honesty, it’s a quick 37-minute front-to-back listen that fans should take the time to groove through.

With hip-hop’s dominating presence in pop music over the last few years, Future Nostalgia is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly uniform genre and gives dance fans a glimmer of hope in the future of pop music.
