Funny? Check. A bit idiotic? Maybe. Creative and club-ready? Absolutely. That would be the gist of how we feel about the latest upload by SIZE records— who are leaning into the experimental zone even more lately— with Kommando’s “SINGER IDIOT.” That title sounds eccentric, one might say. Well, that can be said for the idiosyncratic, and frankly, refreshing style of production in this track.
Rocking a ‘hotshot’ persona, Kommando has a unique ethos when it comes to his presentation. The Italian artist doesn’t narrow his craftsmanship to one genre; rather, his musical catalog is a medley of various styles and experiments. This isn’t his first rodeo with Steve Angello’s imprint either, having been featured in “SIZE xx TML,” a collaborative compilation between Tomorrowland Music and SIZE.
Before that, his previous year EP “PIGGYBANK” released last year, containing tracks such as the disco-flavored electro “KOMM ANDO” to “MISHMASHER”: a hypnotic melodic techno beat with a brassy twist.
Fast forwarding, we face “SINGER IDIOT,” a track functioning as a mischievous and bodacious tech house. Instantly opening the beat are hoots and hollers preceded by an infectious “la-la-la” chant. Intentionally silly and downright earworm, the instrumental doesn’t hold back— instead, it serves a full-bodied and meaty low-end packed with crisp 909 drums, as electro synths act as sharp stabs to brighten the flowing groove. Despite the simplicity, the odd over-the-top yet ingenious character gives an energetic and lively edge to the track.
Unconventional and action-packed, “SINGER IDIOT” could be mistaken for a frivolous creation. On the contrary, Kommando’s pizzaz is infectious thanks to his nifty and bold composition techniques.
