Hi MITCH DB, how are you?

I am doing great, thank you! Thanks for having me on this interview!

To start, can you share what initially drew you to music? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?

That’s a great question! My love for music began when I was very young. Around the age of 7/8, I received my first DJ lessons from my sister’s boyfriend. He introduced me to the process, and I found it fascinating. However, I didn’t pursue it further until I was about 16/17. At that point, I often went out with friends who were DJs and performed at their shows. By the time we were 18/19, I had become their tour manager, travelling across the country with them for gigs.

This experience deepened my passion for music. One day, while talking with one of my closest friends, one of the DJs, he decided to teach me how to play. He showed me the basics, and I borrowed his small DJ controller, a CDJ 350. It had no waveforms, so I had to listen carefully to the music to learn.

After countless hours of practising in my bedroom, I decided to enter a DJ contest at a local club. Out of eight participants, I placed fourth. Even though I didn’t win, the owner of the venue recognized potential in my sets. He offered me the chance to play at his bar on weekends, from 9 PM (when the bar staff arrived) until 11 PM (when the first DJ started). He allowed me to use the professional equipment there, giving me valuable practice time.

After a year of playing every Friday and Saturday night, I started getting invitations to perform at other shows. That period marked the true beginning of my journey in music, and I still remember those early experiences as if they happened yesterday.

How did your breakthrough year in 2018 shape your path as an Artist?

2018 was a pivotal year for me, and it didn’t come easy. It was all about hard work, constant hustling, and having the right support from the people around me. That year, I entered another contest, this time for a chance to perform at Dance Tour, a major festival. I ended up winning first place, which was a game-changer for my career. It gave me the opportunity to perform at the festival in front of 10,000 people, alongside some of the biggest artists in the Netherlands.

I also decided to invest in a photographer, which turned out to be a smart move. I walked away from the festival with over 300 photos that I used to market myself on Instagram. This boosted my visibility and opened up new opportunities. Soon after, more clubs started reaching out to book me for performances.

By the end of the year, I landed two international gigs: a pool party in Thailand and a month-long residency in Bulgaria for 2019. Winning that contest in 2018 and performing on such a big stage truly set the foundation for my growth as an artist.

Was there a specific turning point that led you to transition from DJing to producing, and how did it shape your journey?

Absolutely, there was a turning point! Early in my career, I primarily focused on creating mixtapes, which I shared on SoundCloud. I was also experimenting with FL Studio, learning how it worked, but the music I made during that time was mostly for personal use and never released publicly.

The real shift happened during the COVID pandemic when everything shut down, and live shows were no longer an option. With more time on my hands, I started focusing heavily on producing. I created remixes, edits, and mashups for myself and began sharing them on SoundCloud. This turned out to be a great move, as these creations helped me grow my name in the industry. To this day, those releases have collectively garnered tens of millions of streams.

While the pandemic was a difficult time, it gave me the opportunity to explore and define the direction I wanted to take with my music. Coming out of the COVID period, I felt stronger and more focused. By 2022/2023, I began collaborating with Soave Records, marking a new chapter in my journey as an artist.

How would you describe your signature style? Which artists have been most influential in shaping your sound?

My signature style during a show is super energetic, with a strong focus on engaging the crowd. I love creating an atmosphere where people feel connected to the music and each other. This energy also carries into the music I release. I always aim to create tracks that make people sing, feel happy and let them move.

This combination of my DJing style and production approach gives every release and live performance a unique and personal touch. It’s all about bringing positive energy and creating moments people won’t forget.

Can you tell us about your live performances? What’s been the most unforgettable moment you’ve had on stage so far?

Live performances are my absolute favorite part of being an artist. There’s nothing like meeting the people and fans who listen to my music in real life. Online numbers don’t really capture the feeling, but seeing their faces and energy in person makes it so much more meaningful.

I’ve had many unforgettable moments on stage, but my favorite one of 2024 has to be my first performance at Space Plus in Bangkok, ranked the number 46 club in the world by DJ Mag. The Thai people always give me such a warm and welcoming feeling, it’s like being at home, even though I’m on the other side of the world from Amsterdam, where I’m from.

What made this night truly special was the energy of the crowd. From the moment I started my set, people were in front of the stage, fully engaged, and they kept that energy going throughout the entire performance. It was unreal! Add to that the iconic status of the venue, with its incredible atmosphere and a capacity of 2,000 people, it’s easily one of my favorite places to perform in Asia.

What impact has working with Soave Records had on your career and sound?

Soave Records has had, and continues to have, a huge impact on my career. They were the first to truly believe in me and recognize my potential. After spending two years during the COVID period developing my skills, and releasing countless unofficial remixes and edits on my SoundCloud, we decided to collaborate and focus on releasing mostly covers.

Working with Soave has opened so many opportunities for me. They’ve connected me with other talented Soave artists, which has helped me grow both as a producer and as an artist. Their support has played a major role in shaping my sound and taking my career to the next level.

How do you see the landscape of Electronic Music evolving, and how do you envision your role in its future?

I see a lot of movement in the Electronic Music scene, and I’m definitely evolving with it. I believe it’s crucial to keep developing myself in line with the industry while staying true to my own style. This doesn’t mean I need to change who I am, but it’s important to adapt and incorporate trends that align with the vision of MITCH DB.

It’s all about staying aware of what’s happening in the scene, shaping my unique sound for the future of Electronic Music, and at the same time, keeping in touch with what my fans want to hear from me.

What role do collaborations play in shaping your creative process and pushing your artistic boundaries?

Working with other artists inspires me a lot. I often collaborate with the same artists, which works really well because we share the same passion and support each other whenever one of us gets stuck. It’s a dynamic that keeps the creativity flowing.

At the same time, working with artists I’ve never collaborated with before is always a unique and exciting experience. Building something together allows for fresh ideas and new perspectives. I’m often surprised by the final result, it’s completely different from a solo release. Having two or three additional creative minds involved can take the music in a direction I wouldn’t have imagined on my own.

Finally, what are your ultimate goals as a DJ and Producer, and how do you plan to achieve them?

My goal is to make people all over the world happy with my music. My ultimate goal is to convert this into worldwide shows, giving every fan the opportunity to experience a unique MITCH DB live performance. I want to go the extra mile for every show, delivering a full experience with stunning visuals, light shows, and SFX to create magical moments and unforgettable memories for everyone who attends.

How do I plan to achieve this? My team and I are fully committed to reaching this goal. We’ll bring maximum energy to every new release and live performance in the coming year, ensuring we deliver on this vision and continue to connect with fans around the globe.
