Ian O’Donovan is a DJ’s producer, as seen from co-signs he’s gotten from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, and of course, John Digweed, who famously helped break his career a decade ago. After years of producing club favorites among the progressive and melodic house/techno circles, the time has come for the Irish talent to tackle his first longform project. Still Waters is out on April 3, and Dancing Astronaut has gotten one of its first tastes in “Astra.”
“Astra” bears the theme alluded to in its name, taking the mind on a space ship with eerie, yet futuristic synth melodies and piano stabs that come together in a cool embrace. Thunderous kicks put the ship into hyperdrive, with a burst of energy in the second half that maintains momentum until the end. If “Astra” is any indication of what’s to come in O’Donovan’s LP debut, then we’re set to be gifted a good deal of peaktime tracks in the coming days.
