“A Terrible Accident”
The official statement from Transgressive Records revealed SOPHIE’s cause of death to be accidental in nature.
“Tragically our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us. The family thanks everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.”

Fans and close personal friends alike are devastated at the news of the trailblazing and brilliant artist’s sudden death.
Peaches also lamented the passing of SOPHIE on Twitter, writing, “I’m heartbroken. Thank you Sophie Rest In Power! You will always be remembered as a true game-changer, powerful presence, and an incredibly original producer! Your music and production brought me so much joy!”
Singer Rina Sawayama also spoke of SOPHIE’s death: “RIP SOPHIE, u were the sweetest – an icon and a visionary. the world and our community has lost a beautiful soul.”
A History in Memoriam
The numerous accomplishments throughout SOPHIE’s career offer a glimpse into her amazing life and legacy.
“Born and raised in Glasgow, Sophie began releasing music and performing as a DJ a decade ago. Eventually becoming affiliated with innovative pop music collective PC Music,” said Daniel Kreps and Brittany Spanos of SOPHIE in their Rolling Stone Article “Avant-Pop Producer Sophie Dead at 34 After ‘Sudden Accident.’”
Kreps and Spanos went on to say, “In 2013, Sophie began releasing music and gained significant notoriety a year later with the single “Lemonade”/“Hard. Sophie quickly became a go-to producer for pop stars looking to experiment in the genre. Like Madonna who enlisted the visionary producer for her 2015 single “Bitch I’m Madonna.” Sophie’s most frequent partnership was with Charli XCX. First working with the star on the EP Vroom Vroom.”
Throughout the years, SOPHIE has worked with Cashmere Cat, Vince Staples, Mø, and Le1f. She has also produced numerous remixes. The music world will miss her sorely.
