About S2O Songkran Music Festival
Songkran is Thailand’s most famous festival, typically celebrated from April 13th to 15th. It marks the sun’s annual passing into the Aries constellation, symbolizing the start of a new astrological year and a time for cleansing and renewal. The most recognizable element of Songkran is the splashing of water. This tradition originally involved gently pouring scented water over Buddha images and the hands of elders as a sign of respect and to wash away bad luck, ushering in good fortune for the new year. Over time, it evolved into the exuberant, nationwide water fights that Thailand is famous for today, attracting tourists from all over the world.
Founders Woody Milintachinda (a renowned Thai influencer and talk show host) and Pulin Milintachinda (a former diplomat) had the idea to combine this traditional water-splashing element with modern electronic dance music. They envisioned a festival where people could enjoy both the cultural significance of Songkran’s blessings and the high-energy atmosphere of a world-class music event. The name “S2O” itself is a clever play on words: “S” stands for Songkran, and “2O” is derived from H2O, representing water.
S2O officially debuted in 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand. The festival’s unique concept and success internationally is quickly leading to expansions around the world. From Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, now it’s time for the United States.
