Sofiya Nzau And Madism Reinterpret Robert Miles’ ‘Children’ In New Afro Single ‘Hutia’

New life is once again coming to an absolutely timeless piece of music.

No warmups or warnings issued this time. Listen: hit Kenyan singer-songwriter Sofiya Nzau and Dutch producer Madism have teamed up to release their Afro House take on Robert Miles’ genre-defining composition, ‘Children‘. The new song, titled ‘Hutia‘, features Nzau performing original lyrics in the Kikuyu language.

Robert Miles made history three decades ago with the original ‘Children’, a song which married piano lines and Dance music pioneerly and helped kickstart movements such as Dream Trance, which ultimately led to Trance and the other Dance genres growing and developing. The new production is led by Madism, a heavyweight Dutch DJ and producer with over a billion streams across platforms.

‘Hutia’

For this project, Madism carefully takes the original piano melody and weaves it into a rich afro house track. His work keeps the atmospheric quality of ‘Children’ in a respectful way, while moving the song into a new place. Meanwhile, Sofiya Nzau, who first gained wide attention with Zerb’s hugely popular track ‘Mwaki’ in 2023, sings in Kikuyu, the language spoken by Kenya’s largest ethnic group, about themes of deep longing, closeness, and love.

It’s interesting to think that the track that broke new ground for music thirty years ago and inspired a generation of artists which ranges from Tiësto to Paul van Dyk, keep reinventing itself by the hand of producers who’ve all been hugely influenced by this record. ‘Hutia’ acts as both a sincere tribute to the late Robert Miles and a new way of interpreting his work. It manages to breathe fresh energy into a piece of music that has never lost its original magic or appeal.
