Thundercat shares the first track, “Black Qualls,” from his newly announced It Is What It Is LP to be released Brainfeeder Records on April 3. The song features Steve Lacy from The Internet and legendary funk icon, Steve Arrington. Funk immediately hits listeners in the face with Lacy’s high-register cooled-out vocals and bouncing electric guitar riffs that proceed to a psychedelic realm for a jarring turn in the arrangement.
The album is co-produced by label boss Flying Lotus and is set to serve features and contributions from the likes of Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole, and of course Zack Fox.
It Is What It Is, one of Dancing Astronaut‘s most anticipated records of the year, is the fourth studio album from the Grammy-winning bass virtuoso, landing as the follow up his stellar Drunk project in 2017. In a press statement on the impending record, Thundercat said, “This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand… some things just aren’t meant to be understood.” Hear “Black Qualls” below.
