To ring in a long-awaited New Year’s Eve Tomorrowland 2020 will be hosting a virtual festival. The news follows the release of Tomorrowland’s 2020 streaming festival “Around the World.” A documentary, “Never stop the music – The Creation of Tomorrowland 2020,” also pre-empted the announcement.
A Second Virtual Festival
Tomorrowland co-founder Michiel Beers spoke about the impact of digital festivals in a Billboard interview. “We believe that digital will exist next to live,” said Beers. “We also believe that we have to create moments that people really want to see [us] live stream in a special way. And really see it as a small event.”
Funding and Artist Questions
Initial reports indicated Tomorrowland’s “Around the World” festival took $10 million to finance. Beers also reported noting that the true cost was closer to $5 million. Several initial reports also revealed that the “Around the World” virtual festival failed to produce a profit. Others reported it failed to meet the numbers desired by organizers. As for a line-up, much is still unknown for who could perform. Artists in Around the World included Dimitri Vegas, Armin van Buuren, and Martin Garrix.
Tomorrowland Winter 2021 Cancelled
Officials for Tomorrowland Winter 2021 never publicly announced the festival’s cancelation. The official Tomorrowland Winter 2021 festival was originally set for March 14th to March 21st. However, their website states that the event is canceled.
The Official Announcement
The official announcement regarding the cancellation of Tomorrowland Winter 2021 comes from the Tomorrowland website. “Tomorrowland Winter 2021 cannot take place due to the uncertain circumstances created by COVID-19. Organizing a festival such as Tomorrowland Winter requires a lot of preparation. Both by the organizers and local partners, as well as by you, the People of Tomorrow. Considering the current lack of prospects for the coming months. Tomorrowland has no choice but to not organize a Tomorrowland Winter edition in 2021.”
