• Launch of Just Records with debut single
• Straightforward techno structure with punchy bassline
• A bit predictable but still fun in the long run
I’ve been following Justus for a while now, ever since that beautiful release on Spinnin’, “Meant To Be“. Since then he’s been collecting collabs with some of the biggest names around like Armin, Guetta, Aoki and many more. Honestly, I’m glad to see this Dutch talent building his own path. His “Satisfaction” remix went insanely viral, with hundreds of millions of streams, though for me it sounded more like a basic bootleg than his best work. Still, music works in mysterious ways.
Now comes the next chapter: Just Records. A brand new label with “You Are My X” as its debut release. Like with most debuts, this one feels more like a starting point than a huge statement. Think of how W&W kicked off “Rave Culture” with a simple release just to set the tone. Same idea here.
Musically, I wasn’t expecting Justus to go dark techno, but I’m not complaining. “You Are My X” doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. The structure is standard, but the execution works. The drums roll forward in a very aggressive, hypnotic way and keep the momentum tight. The vocal is nothing special, and to be honest I found it forgettable.
What saves the track is the drop. The bassline is pure Justus, heavy and clean, and it hits harder than most techno at this tempo. It makes the whole thing much more enjoyable than I thought it would be.
Overall, Just Records has an interesting start. It will take time to really find its identity, but with Justus’ talent I’m sure it will grow into something solid. This first step is dark, simple, and promising.
