Black Coffee Goa Show Cancelled Last Minute After Good Friday Opposition

Thousands of electronic music fans were left disappointed in Goa, India after a highly anticipated performance by Black Coffee was abruptly cancelled just hours before it was scheduled to begin.

The event, part of the Grammy-winning DJ’s India tour, was set to take place in Anjuna on April 3 as a “Sunset to Night” showcase. However; authorities revoked the event’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) on the evening of the show after objections from local groups who raised concerns about holding a music event on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days in the Christian calendar.

The permission had originally been granted on March 4, but the managing committee of the Communidade of Anjuna — the traditional landholding body where the event was scheduled to take place — later voted to withdraw the approval following complaints from residents and political leaders.

Officials said the decision was made out of respect for the religious significance of Good Friday and the broader Holy Week observances leading up to Easter Sunday.

The last-minute cancellation reportedly left thousands of attendees gathered outside the venue after many had already traveled to Goa specifically for the show. Videos circulating on social media show crowds waiting outside the location as news of the cancellation spread.

In a statement following the cancellation, organizers addressed the situation and confirmed that refunds would be issued.

Goa has long been considered one of India’s most iconic nightlife destinations and a global hub for electronic music events. However, the cancellation highlights the ongoing tension that can arise between the region’s thriving dance music tourism industry and the cultural and religious traditions of local communities.
