Last Friday, Mississippi police executed a significant operation, arresting two individuals following the tragic discovery of two Ole Miss students found unresponsive in separate locations throughout the week. While investigations into the exact circumstances remain ongoing, authorities have identified a common factor at both scenes: the presence of Kratom. According to reports from NBC News, Metro Narcotics conducted a raid on the Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store, situated on the 100 block of Heritage Drive in Oxford.
Journalists David K. Li and Anthony Cusumano reported that Oxford police seized over 500 units of Kratom, alongside various THC products, gummies, and other narcotics. The sale and distribution of Kratom have been strictly prohibited in Oxford since 2019. In connection with the raid, police arrested 51-year-old Yahya Mohamed Mosleh and 18-year-old Islam Mohamed on multiple drug-related charges. Furthermore, the store’s owner, 40-year-old Amer Alowdi, faces scrutiny due to prior drug possession charges, though he reportedly fled the country before legal proceedings could be finalized.
The Victims and Growing Concerns
The victims, identified as freshman Aidan Hamilton and junior Robert Strang, were discovered deceased on campus in separate incidents last week. While the official cause of death for both students has not yet been determined, the discovery of Kratom at both locations has intensified public and law enforcement concern regarding the substance. Data indicates that between 2015 and 2025, calls related to Kratom poisoning surged by 1200%. At this stage, investigators have not confirmed a direct link between the recent arrests and the deaths of the two students.
Understanding Kratom
Often referred to as a “gas station herb,” Kratom is known for producing opioid-like effects. According to NBC News, the substance has gained traction as an unapproved alternative treatment for pain management, anxiety, and drug dependency, despite significant health warnings from regulatory bodies.
