It’s been a while between drinks for Jamie xx but the much-loved producer has broken the hiatus with a huge new cut dubbed Idontknow.
The new single is a fast-paced, dance-floor gem with diced up vocals and a driving bass line. If it sounds a little familiar it may be because you have heard it before, with the track popping up a few times in some of Jamie’s own mixes of late, but more notably in Caribou’s incredible Essential Mix that dropped in March.
Speaking on the release, Jamie says the track was made “as an outlet for my frustration over not being able to finish any music for a while. I tried to be less precious with my ideas and just let go. I then watched this translate onto the dance floor when I started playing it out last year. Now, we can’t go out to dance and we need an outlet more than ever, I hope you dance to it at home and let go for a moment.”
Aside from a string of production work for the likes of Kelsey Lu and – more recently – rapper Headie One; Jamie has kept himself rather quiet over the last few years on the release front. In fact, his last big release came in the form of the silky 2017 remix of On Hold. Prior to that, his last solo work was his 2015 album In Colour. Could a new album be on the horizon for 2020?
The single will also be getting pressed as a 12″ and be distributed solely to indie record stores around the world. Jamie added on a social media post that “They [indie record stores] need our support more than ever.”
