A Burning Man attendee required a complex emergency rescue after falling from a 55-foot-tall structure at Black Rock City on Tuesday. The incident occurred at the Square One camp at approximately 6:20 p.m. on September 1, as the participant fell two levels from near the top of the camp’s 10-level Nest Tower.
Witnesses reported that the man landed on a metal crossbar during the fall, sustaining potential injuries to his head, ribs, and hip. The rescue operation was particularly challenging due to the height and structure of the tower. Emergency responders had to climb the installation to stabilize the individual while a construction vehicle was brought in to raise an aerial platform, allowing crews to safely lower him to the playa for medical assessment.
A Challenging Rescue During Tutu Tuesday
The accident took place during the event’s popular “Tutu Tuesday” tradition, where participants wear tutus throughout the day. In a surreal scene, many of the emergency responders were also dressed in tutus as they executed the high-stakes rescue. The 30-year-old attendee was subsequently transported to Rampart, the festival’s temporary hospital, for further treatment.
Square One camp leaders Lee and Gaby Merschon noted that the Nest Tower has been a fixture at the event since 2021. While the structure has grown in height over the years, they confirmed that this was the first injury associated with the installation.

This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with large-scale art installations in the remote desert environment. Falls from elevated structures have occurred in previous years, including a 2024 incident involving Rachael Gingery, who suffered significant injuries after falling from an art piece resembling a sinking ship.
Burning Man Continues Amidst Disruptions
The rescue occurred during a particularly difficult week for the festival. Heavy rainfall transformed parts of the playa into thick mud, forcing organizers to temporarily restrict access to the site. Furthermore, the Burning Man Project confirmed that a participant in his mid-50s passed away following a separate medical emergency on September 3, despite receiving immediate care from onsite medical staff.
As the event continues through September 7, the focus remains on safety within the unique, challenging conditions of Black Rock City. Official updates regarding the condition of the attendee involved in the Nest Tower fall have not yet been released.
