Animal Souls is the multi-genre project of bassist and producer Michael Fisher, and his latest release serves as a compelling introduction to his sonic world. “COLORFUL LAND” is the opening single from his upcoming album THE ABYSS, a record built around heavy synth influences and collaborations with a curated selection of indie artists. While the track draws from techno and synthwave foundations, it ultimately lands in a space far more experimental and nuanced than those labels suggest.
The standout element of the production is undoubtedly the vocal performance. Ella Blame, who also contributed the cover art, delivers a vocal that feels simultaneously detached and deeply immersive. She sings with a dreamlike quality, avoiding the trap of over-singing or forced emotional crescendos. Instead, her flat, hypnotic delivery keeps the listener locked into a cycle, turning the melody into something you follow rather than simply hum along to.
The production mirrors this sense of wonder. Electronic textures shift constantly, supported by drums that intentionally stumble and stutter, creating a rhythmic instability that feels perfectly suited for a psychedelic track. Fisher masterfully leaves enough air in the mix to ensure that even when the percussion intensifies, the soundscape never feels cluttered.
While the track is an experimental triumph, there is a slight desire for more character in the low end, which remains somewhat polite compared to the adventurous nature of the rest of the arrangement. Nevertheless, “COLORFUL LAND” is a strong, promising look at THE ABYSS. It introduces a concept of “Psychadelitronica” that feels fresh, exciting, and well worth exploring.
