The story behind the latest release from Don Diablo is one of organic growth and unexpected success. His high-energy take on the A$AP Ferg classic, “Plain Jane,” was never actually intended for a commercial release. Instead, the producer crafted the edit specifically as a secret weapon for his live performances, particularly during his tour through Saudi Arabia alongside Quavo and Metro Boomin.
“Every time I played it, the reaction got bigger. It just kept growing organically until it became one of the biggest moments in my set,” Diablo shared. It is easy to understand why the track resonated so deeply with crowds. By maintaining the iconic boom bap bounce of the original, the remix respects the source material while injecting a fresh, modern energy.
The production showcases a masterclass in balance. A$AP Ferg’s distinct Harlem delivery remains the focal point, while Diablo constructs a soundscape of wobbling Future House synths and a heavy, driving low end. It is a rare example of two seemingly disparate genres—hip-hop and house—coexisting without compromising the integrity of either.
While the track is undeniably effective, it is not without minor flaws. The second drop feels somewhat repetitive, mirroring the first exactly. A slight variation in the synth pattern or a brief breakdown could have elevated the back half of the track even further. Nevertheless, the remix serves as a compelling follow-up to his previous collaborations, such as his work with Wiz Khalifa, and fits perfectly within the aesthetic of his FLUX album, released via HEXAGON.
“Plain Jane” was already a massive cultural touchstone, boasting over 800 million Spotify streams on the original version alone. Taking on such a track was a significant risk, but as Diablo notes, it represents a “perfect marriage between where I come from as a producer and where my sound is heading next.”
