Billy McFarland and Ja Rule created the Fyre Festival – the event in the Bahamas never happened. Fyre Festival Lawsuit
After four years of not knowing what would happen to the money lost, attendees will finally receive some compensation. In the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, organizers and about 277 ticket holders discussed the $2 million settlement. According to The New York Times, “But Ben Meiselas, a partner at Geragos & Geragos and the lead lawyer representing the ticket holders, said on Thursday that he was happy a resolution had at last been reached. “Billy went to jail, ticket holders can get some money back, and some very entertaining documentaries were made,” Meiselas said in an email mentioning Billy McFarland, the event’s mastermind. “Now that’s justice.”
Billy McFarland and Ja Rule have faced multiple lawsuits against their company Fyre Media. McFarland is currently serving a six-year prison sentence for pleading guilty to fraud charges. More regarding the settlement will happen on May 13th. The final payout could be lower depending on how Fyre Festival fares in bankruptcy suits. Things could change, but this is huge for attendees.
Fyre Festival
In April of 2017, guests arrived in the Bahamas only to find out that the Fyre Festival didn’t exist. Attendees paid between $1,000 to $12,000 to have a lavish and exotic weekend with music, celebrities, and luxury accommodations. Sadly, this was not the case, as the weekend was full of lies and chaoticness. The event staff didn’t even receive payment for their hard work. McFarland is currently serving his time and attendees are finally receiving compensation for this terrible event.
