Galantis is back with new music today, officially releasing ‘Do You Mind’ via Ninja Tune’s Counter Records. Alongside this latest single, the project has announced the arrival of a forthcoming EP, The Devil’s Tax Return: Volume 1, which is scheduled for release on October 16.
‘Do You Mind’ serves as a sophisticated rework of Paleface ft. Kyla’s 2007 UK bassline and R&B classic. The track, which gained significant mainstream traction through Crazy Cousinz’s 2009 remix and later via Drake’s sampling of Kyla’s vocals on ‘One Dance’ in 2016, is reimagined here with a focus on the emotional core of the original melody. Rather than simply layering over the source material, the production has been rebuilt from the ground up.
“Some records feel untouchable because they already captured a moment so perfectly,” says Karlsson. “Instead of trying to completely reinvent it, I wanted to celebrate what made it so special while giving it a new life. It’s a record I’ve loved for years and I like the idea of taking care of the music that we already know and love.”
This release follows the May drop of ‘Stay Alive,’ marking the second single from this new creative chapter. The EP title, The Devil’s Tax Return, offers a tongue-in-cheek perspective from Karlsson, acknowledging the balance between exploring fresh sounds and working within familiar musical territory.
The upcoming EP features a diverse array of reworked material, drawing inspiration from artists such as Frankie Valli, The Killers, Feist, and War On Drugs. These selections reflect the formative years of Karlsson’s career, particularly during the founding of Miike Snow, the indie-dance trio responsible for hits like ‘Animal’ and ‘Genghis Khan.’ The project serves as a personal counterpoint to his earlier work as a top-line pop producer under the Bloodshy moniker, where he co-wrote and produced iconic tracks for Britney Spears, Madonna, and Katy Perry.
The Devil’s Tax Return: Volume 1 tracklist:
- Stay Alive
- Do You Mind
- Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
- When You Were Young
