Apple’s next generation of iPhone cameras could be preparing for a significant upgrade. Newly discovered references within iOS 27 code seemingly point towards several advanced camera tools making their way into Apple’s Camera app. While these discoveries are still a far cry from fact, these features would provide the iPhone 18 Pro with a much more hands-on photography and videography experience.
What the iOS 27 Leaks Reveal
According to the reported code discoveries, five potential camera upgrades are set to expand the amount of control available within the Camera app:
- Waveform and histogram displays: Users can better understand exposure by seeing where an image contains particularly bright or dark areas.
- Focus peaking: The edges of subjects in sharp focus are highlighted, making it easier to compose images and video.
- Manual focus: Users can take direct control over where the camera focuses instead of relying on autofocus.
- Repeated self-timer shots: Timers automatically begin again after a timed photograph has been captured.
- Aperture-based lens correction: A variable aperture that adjusts lens corrections based on the aperture setting applied.
While it’s possible some of these upgrades are applied to models beyond the iPhone 18 Pro, we have yet to receive any direct indication.
What We Still Don’t Know
The biggest question surrounding these discoveries is quite simple: “Will Apple actually ship them?” The reported tools cannot be activated yet, meaning they remain hidden references that could be released in a future version of iOS, limited to specific devices, or delayed and possibly abandoned altogether.
We could be getting clarity on the situation with Apple’s “Sunshine and Shine” event taking place September 9th, where their newest iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be announced in addition to their first foldable iPhone. Historically, photographers and videographers looking for deeper manual control have often turned to third-party applications to access more advanced tools. Should all these features be introduced, that could begin to change. However, until Apple officially announces its plans, the exact future of these tools and creators’ satisfaction with Apple’s native apps will remain uncertain.
