Brooklyn’s Refuge NYC is turning one, and the club is marking the occasion with a month-long anniversary program running throughout September. In just a year, the 500-capacity venue tucked between East Williamsburg and Bushwick has built a reputation as one of New York’s most respected underground rooms—not through marketing pushes, but through word of mouth and a stubborn insistence on putting the music first.
The anniversary season pairs foundational house names with a new generation of underground talent, building toward a birthday weekend from September 25 through 27. The lineup includes Natasha Diggs, Deep Dish, The Martinez Brothers, Chris Liebing, and Rodriguez Jr., alongside residents Victor Calderone and David Morales, with additional names still to be confirmed.
A Commitment to Pure Nightlife
What’s made Refuge stand out in a city with no shortage of nightlife options is what it’s chosen to skip. There’s no VIP section, no bottle service, and no attempt to turn the dancefloor into a backdrop for anything other than dancing. Instead, the focus stays on programming, sound, and the kind of long-form DJ sets that harken back to New York’s golden club era—resident-driven nights where the story unfolds over hours, not just a headline slot.
That philosophy runs straight through the club’s sound system, a custom-built rig known as REX and designed by engineer Craig “Shorty” Bernabeu. Rather than leaving it alone once installed, Bernabeu and the Refuge team have kept tweaking it over the past 12 months—bespoke analogue EQs, vintage JBL tweeters, and ongoing acoustic adjustments that have kept the room evolving. Even the DJ booth monitoring has been reworked to help artists perform better, and the wooden dancefloor gets sanded regularly to keep the slip just right for dancers. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes obsession that doesn’t always get noticed, but tends to separate clubs that last from ones that don’t.
September Anniversary Schedule
The anniversary season kicks off September 5 with trance and progressive veterans Gabriel & Dresden, followed by a 12-hour set from house stalwart David Morales that same night. From there, the calendar fills out fast—Natasha Diggs, Future.666, David Löhlein, Vanjee, Gorje Hewek, Volen Sentir, Rodriguez Jr., The Martinez Brothers, Two Shell, Black Asteroid, Akua, Ahadadream, Coffintexts, Serge Devant, John Dimatteo, Shorty, Deep Dish, Victor Calderone, and Brothers Macklovitch (A-Trak & Dave 1) all make appearances throughout the month.
The birthday weekend itself is where things really ramp up. Deep Dish plays an exclusive open-to-close set on September 25, followed by a night from John Dimatteo and Shorty on the 26th. The weekend closes out with Victor Calderone at sunrise and Brothers Macklovitch—the A-Trak and Dave 1 project—capping things off on the 27th.
