As you might have guessed from the title, the Dutch EDM duo W&W has released a remix of a meme, “OIIA OIIA (Spinning Cat)”. They’ve even included a subtitle because this meme goes by a few different names and is actually a combination of two things. First, there’s “Oo Ee A E A,” a vocalization of “Friday Night Funkin’” soundtrack that went viral in 2022. It gained even more popularity after a TikTok video was posted featuring a WhatsApp audio clip that mimicked the tune. Then there’s Ethel the Cat, a cute elderly cat who became famous for a meme template of her image spinning around. Put these two elements together, and you have a low-quality meme that’s racked up millions of views.
W&W took this viral moment and turned it into something more substantial, adding a PsyTrance bassline with punchy kicks underneath. The drop itself is straightforward, but the buildup is really well done, especially given the limited material they had to work with. What stands out the most is how polished the vocal loop sounds, even though it’s likely taken from the low-quality WhatsApp audio of the original meme. W&W slowed it down, adjusted the pitch, and played around with it throughout the track, creating a surprisingly professional result. Honestly, if I didn’t know the meme (and to be fair, I didn’t), I might have thought this was just another typical release. What got me, though, was the spinning cats in the video.
Meme songs are often so low-effort that they’re not worth mentioning, except in very rare cases (like Povero Gabbiano by Marnage). But W&W clearly put some real effort into “OIIA OIIA (Spinning Cat)”. The result is a fun track that’s sure to go viral and get people laughing. After all, who doesn’t need a good laugh now and then? This is probably the best meme remix I’ve heard in a long time.
And here’s the heartwarming part: a portion of the proceeds from the song will go to Ethel the Cat’s care, with another part donated to the Cat Welfare Association, the non-profit shelter that gave her a second chance.
