In a significant move for the Los Angeles electronic music scene, Insomniac, the world-renowned electronic music event company, has purchased the iconic AVALON Hollywood nightclub for a reported $15.7 million. This acquisition solidifies a partnership that began last year and secures the venue’s future as a hub for electronic music. The sale by Ligny LLC marks the first time in 50 years that the historic property at 1735 Vine Street has changed hands.
Pasquale Rotella, the founder and CEO of Insomniac, emphasized the company’s sense of responsibility in making the purchase. With the venue’s lease coming to an end and new ownership uncertain, Rotella stated, “We felt we had a responsibility to step in and purchase the property.” He noted the venue’s rich history, which dates back over six decades, and its legacy as “a sanctuary for music lovers and artists.” The decision, he said, was made to “protect a vital piece of LA’s culture and ensure it continues to thrive.”
AVALON Hollywood has long been a cornerstone of dance music, hosting an impressive roster of artists including Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, Eric Prydz, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Kaskade, and Markus Schulz. In its earlier days as The Palace, it welcomed legendary figures like Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Sasha, and John Digweed. Insomniac is committed to preserving the venue’s legacy and continuing its role as a vibrant center for music, community, and inspiration. The acquisition, in collaboration with veteran music venue operator John Lyons, will allow them to build on Avalon’s storied past.
The new ownership will enable Insomniac to bring an even wider range of electronic styles and artists to the venue. Their various brands, such as Dreamstate, Day Trip, Bassrush, and Factory 93, will now have the opportunity to host their own curated events at the location. The 33,400-square-foot property joins Insomniac’s growing portfolio of nightlife destinations, which includes Exchange LA, Academy LA, NOVA SD, TIME Nightclub, and Echostage.
