Above & Beyond have linked up with Apple Music for the latest edition of the platform’s One Mix series, and this one comes with a twist. Rather than a standard DJ mix, the trio recorded and presented the hour-long set in Spatial Audio, offering a different way to hear music that spans their entire catalogue.
Instead of putting together a straightforward retrospective, Jono Grant, Paavo Siljamäki, and Tony McGuinness went back to the original multitrack sessions behind the songs that have defined the group’s run over the past two and a half decades. Revisiting those recordings in Spatial Audio brought out details, harmonies, and textures that tend to get buried in a traditional stereo mix, giving longtime favorites some added depth without losing what made them connect with fans in the first place.
“This is a retrospective mix featuring music of ours from the last 25 years, from ‘Tri-State’ to ‘Bigger Than All Of Us,’ and all points in between,” the trio said. “It’s been very revealing to deep dive into old projects, remembering the parts that aren’t so obvious in the stereo mix, that become players in the Spatial Audio mix. We’re grateful to the team at Apple for giving people such an immersive, multi-channel experience. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.”
The One Mix builds on Above & Beyond’s ongoing relationship with Apple Music. The trio recently sat down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 for a conversation about Bigger Than All Of Us, touching on the album’s themes of connection, creativity, mental health, and the community that has built up around their music over the years.
15 Tracks, And A Journey Through 25 Years
It really is a mix that has it all. From modern original tracks across the history of the group, such as ‘Gratitude’ and ‘Quicksand’, to evergreen hits ‘Sun & Moon’ and ‘Blue Sky Action’, the viral ‘Blue Monday’ cover, and the pride-filled remix for Faithless’ ‘Salva Mea 2.0’, you’ll find yourself digging tunes from all over the band’s eras.
For a group that’s built its career on songwriting and production before DJing, the Spatial Audio format gave them a reason to revisit songs that have soundtracked plenty of moments for their fanbase, hearing familiar recordings from a new angle. Mixing each track individually in Spatial Audio lets melodies, vocal arrangements, and instrumental layers surface with more clarity than a standard stereo mix allows, making for a listen that’s both nostalgic and genuinely new.
