Porter Robinson and Ninajirachi Unveil Highly Anticipated 'WannaCry'

Ninajirachi took fans by surprise at her Coachella performance this April, when she invited Porter Robinson to the stage and premiered their first ever collaboration, ‘WannaCry.’ The artists continued building hype and performing the single in their individual shows and when reuniting on stages in Washington, D.C. and Sydney, Australia. Just over 100 days after its debut, ‘WannaCry’ is out now, on NLV Records.

‘WannaCry’ uses the name of a 2017 cyberattack and takes the perspective of the computer virus through its lyrics. The track opens with an upbeat intro and builds up with Nina’s vocals, taking a romantic spin with the line “I’ve got a charm, I wanna put it on your heart.” While ‘WannaCry’ represents an instance of Porter Robinson’s return to EDM, he also sings the second verse, incorporating his experiences from the Smile album. The lead melody is catchy and the drops are full of energy and deliberately glitchy, computerized elements. This instant crowd favorite makes perfect sense, drawing from both artists’ digital-age inspired sound design and blending adjacent styles and aesthetics.

Coinciding with the track’s release, Porter Robinson and Ninajirachi joined triple j Radio for an interview, discussing how the artists met, the Coachella premiere of ‘WannaCry’ and their production processes. Throughout the conversation, Ninajirachi also hinted at “other stuff we made,” leaving the door open for further collaboration down the line. Watch the full interview below.
