Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and the nighttime culture consultancy VibeLab have officially announced the launch of the Nighttime Culture Index, a pioneering initiative designed to serve as the first global measure of the cultural vitality of nightlife. The project is set to debut this October, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the world-renowned festival, a milestone that underscores ADE’s enduring influence on the global electronic music landscape.
While the economic impact of the nighttime economy is well-documented—contributing approximately 3% of global GDP and generating up to $4 trillion annually—ADE and VibeLab identified a significant void in how we quantify the cultural contributions of these spaces. The Nighttime Culture Index aims to bridge this gap by focusing on the intangible elements that shape communities, scenes, and urban environments, rather than relying solely on balance sheets.
A New Framework for Cultural Vitality
The Index is structured as a cultural vitality measurement, with its primary output being an interactive public dashboard supported by an annual report. By providing a shared set of evidence, the project seeks to empower stakeholders ranging from underground promoters to municipal policymakers to better understand, support, and defend the essential role of nighttime culture.
The inaugural edition of the Index will evaluate six cities across six continents: Amsterdam, Lagos, New York, Sao Paulo, Seoul, and Sydney. These locations will be assessed across six core categories: Diversity and Representation, Creative Ecology, Space and Infrastructure, Community and Belonging, Policy and Civic Health, and Sustainability and Environment. This launch marks the beginning of a three-year partnership, with plans to expand the scope to include additional cities in 2027 and 2028.

Local Expertise Driving Global Insights
To ensure the data remains grounded in the realities of local scenes, the project utilizes a network of city coordinators who are deeply embedded in their respective nightlife communities. This approach avoids the pitfalls of external analysis by leveraging the expertise of individuals like Israel Ajayi in Lagos, Tara Duvivier in New York, and Monique Dardenne in Sao Paulo, among others.
Mirik Milan, VibeLab co-founder and former Night Mayor of Amsterdam, emphasized the personal significance of the project, noting that it serves as a way to give back to the community that fostered his own professional development. As the industry looks toward the future, the Nighttime Culture Index provides a vital, shared language for advocates to protect the spaces that define our global nightlife culture.
