Of course I won’t shut up about Lane 8’s new single today. ‘Tripwires’ feels like the moment we’ve been waiting for, and yes- we’re all assuming it’s part of Cross Pollination 2. This time, he reunites with French producer Massane, and honestly, are we surprised at how good this is? Their chemistry hits instantly. Massane has long called ‘And We Knew It Was Our Time’ one of his favourite releases, and you can feel that shared history all over this track.
‘Tripwires’
Earlier this week, Lane 8 and Massane teased their upcoming collaboration ‘Tripwires’ across social media, featuring the haunting and soothing vocals of barking continues. TNH fans immediately jumped in—guessing, speculating, and doing what we always do. So for those of you who’ve already heard it, drumroll… you’ve probably guessed (or seen) by now that this track comes from the Fall 2025 mixtape.
‘Tripwires’ marks Daniel’s fourth release in 2026, following ‘Disappear,’ ‘Adelie,’ and ‘Penguin Parade’ – with collaborations alongside Sultan + Shepard, MYRNE, and Robby East. All signs point toward a beautiful Cross Pollination 2, arriving right on time for the This Never Happened 10‑year celebration.
Musically, ‘Tripwires’ leans into Lane 8’s signature atmosphere, but with a slightly more restless energy running through it. The groove starts steady and hypnotic, with a soft but driving pulse that keeps things moving as melodies slowly unfold in layers. You can hear Massane’s touch in the emotional weight—the warm, melodic builds that feel expansive without becoming overwhelming. The vocals from barking continues sit subtly in the mix, never overpowering, adding a hazy human element that deepens the mood. The track never fully explodes; instead, it builds and releases in a controlled, intentional way, pulling you deeper the longer it plays. There’s a quiet tension beneath the surface, balanced by moments that feel warm and reflective.
Are we in for Cross Pollination 2?
If this is part of Cross Pollination 2, it feels like the This Never Happened sound is being gently pushed forward. ‘Tripwires’ hints at a more introspective and textured direction. So far, these four tracks have me genuinely excited as Daniel continues unfolding his journey alongside his collaborators. Now let’s backtrack to Cross Pollination. Do you remember that time? Peak COVID. Different energy. That release was warm, introspective, and deeply human. It laid the groundwork for how Lane 8 would continue to collaborate—showing how his sound could bend and evolve without losing its emotional core. It also introduced many of us to artists like Massane and Kasablanca.
The track that still hits hardest is ‘And We Knew It Was Our Time’ with Massane. It takes its time, stretching past nine minutes without ever feeling indulgent or rushed. Everything about it feels intentional—the slow build, the space, the emotion. It quietly sets the mood for the entire project. The rest of the standouts really depend on where your head’s at: ‘Run’ with Kasablanca leans more into forward motion and club energy, while ‘Buggy’ with Yotto feels playful and loose without losing depth.
Fast‑forward to now—Cross Pollination asked questions. From what we’ve heard so far, Cross Pollination 2 feels like it’s starting to answer them, or at least getting comfortable sitting with the feeling instead of searching for resolution. This music sounds surer, not louder.
This Never Happened Turns 10
Everything seems to be building toward a release ahead of Lane 8’s upcoming TNH shows in London and across the US, celebrating as they turn 10. Most of those shows are already sold out—and if you can make it to one, you absolutely should. You won’t be disappointed. Where will I be seeing all of you? Get all the details here.
Stay tuned to EDMTunes. And just so you know, I’ll be wearing out my repeat button on these tracks until the next mixtape drops. Happy guessing who the next collaborators might be—and whether we’ve already heard them hidden somewhere in the mixtapes we know.
