Tomorrowland 2026: Fireworks and Pyrotechnics Banned for Weekend One

One of the most iconic traditions at Tomorrowland will be absent during the opening weekend of the 2026 festival: the signature fireworks and pyrotechnic displays. Following a directive from the mayors of Boom and Rumst, in coordination with the provincial governor and the local fire brigade, the festival has been officially barred from utilizing pyrotechnics for the first weekend of the event.

The decision, which applies to the festivities scheduled for July 17–19 in Boom, Belgium, is considered final. While the status of the second weekend remains subject to further evaluation, the immediate restriction marks a significant shift in the festival’s production plans. The move comes as a direct response to ongoing drought conditions and environmental concerns, which have prompted local authorities to enforce stricter safety protocols regarding fire hazards.

Authorities Cite Elevated Fire Risk

Municipal officials have implemented a color-coded system to manage fire risks in the region. While the current “code orange” status typically allows for controlled pyrotechnic use, the local leadership has opted for a more conservative approach to ensure public safety. Prior to this total ban on stage fireworks, the festival had already committed to omitting large aerial shells from its production.

Debby Wilmsen, representing the Tomorrowland organization, expressed disappointment regarding the lack of collaborative dialogue before the decision was finalized. “The fireworks are an important part of the festival,” Wilmsen stated, noting the organization’s frustration at learning of the restriction through media channels rather than through direct consultation with the experts responsible for the event’s pyrotechnics.

Safety Measures and Festival Adjustments

This decision follows a period of heightened scrutiny regarding festival safety, particularly in the wake of the 2025 Tomorrowland Mainstage fire. Although the festival successfully navigated that incident through an emergency rebuild, the event prompted comprehensive safety reviews ahead of the 2026 edition. Earlier this year, the festival received clearance from an independent safety commission to proceed, but the current environmental climate has necessitated further operational adjustments.

Despite the absence of aerial displays, the festival continues to move forward with its extensive programming. Organizers have recently unveiled the official livestream schedule, and Apple Music has confirmed it will broadcast live audio from six stages via Club Live. While the visual spectacle of the fireworks will be missed, the core of the Tomorrowland experience—its immersive stage design and world-class lineup—remains intact as the event prepares to welcome attendees from around the globe.
