What So Not is back with ‘Candy Flipping,’ a new single arriving this Friday that features Alina Pash, Jack Blom, and NERVE. It’s the third and final single from the Australian producer’s upcoming EP I SAW A TRAP DJ AND IT CHANGED MY BIO CHEMISTRY, and by the sound of it, may be the most ambitious cut on the project.
The rollout for this EP has been a slow build in contrasts. ‘EVEREST‘ leaned into healing, while ‘MONA LISA‘ dug into self-destruction, with both singles occupying opposite ends of an emotional spectrum. ‘Candy Flipping’ lands somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, which tracks given the title’s nod to the psychedelic experience of combining substances that pull the mind in different directions at once.
What So Not describes the record as ‘a dance of the human ego,’ framing it as a cinematic back-and-forth between opposing forces: euphoria and identity, transformation and ego. Rather than leaning purely on nostalgia for the trap and future bass sound he helped popularize back in the 2010s, the Australian producer says he’s more interested in chasing what made that era feel significant in the first place. That means embracing experimentation and unpredictability rather than just replicating old drops and sound design.
For those who’ve followed his catalog, this framing makes sense. What So Not, born Emoh Instead, built his name alongside Flume in the early Australian bass scene before branching out solo with releases on OWSLA and his own label. His discography includes collaborations with the likes of Skrillex, Daya, and George Maple, and he’s never been shy about restructuring his sound between eras rather than sticking to a formula.
‘Candy Flipping’ continues that pattern. As the final piece of the EP’s rollout, the track is described as some of the most adventurous songwriting and production he’s put out under this new chapter, pushing themes of self-examination and human connection alongside the sonic experimentation.
